Randy Burson is a MD-PhD student studying anthropology and health services research at the University of Pennsylvania. His research aims to build more equitable and human-centered health systems by studying how health policy and scientific evidence are translated into medical practice in the US and Latin America. Originally from New Mexico, he moved to the Philly area to attend Swarthmore College where he studied Biology and Anthropology. In his two gap years after undergrad, Randy completed a Fulbright Research Fellowship in Chile and also conducted health services research at Penn before applying. In medical school, Randy was a recruitment chair for the Latino Medical Student Organization and a member of Penn Med Pride. Having navigated the difficult experience of finding guidance and mentorship as a social sciences MD-PhD applicant and first-generation academic, Randy has since dedicated the last 4+ years to helping students underrepresented in medicine and non-traditional MD-PhD applicants pursue their own career paths.
