Oumou Fofana is a Guinea-American first-year medical student at the Boonshoft School of Medicine. Her alma mater is the Ohio State University in which she received her Bachelor's of Science in Biochemistry with a minor in French. She graduated with Latin honors and received the Outstanding Senior Award, granted to less than one percent of graduating seniors in her class. She has been involved in numerous initiatives and organizations within the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Her most memorable experiences were being president of a student organization called Ladies of Leadership designed to help first-year women of color students on campus, being the director of a volunteer initiative called Project Downtown, and being a teacher’s assistant for a general chemistry course. Outside of school, Oumou worked as a phlebotomist at Grant Medical Center to help prepare herself for a career in the medical field. Oumou is determined and resilient and has overcome many challenges as a first-generation underrepresented minority pursuing medicine. She plans to use her experiences to others, especially those coming from her background. to become future physicians. She is interested in a career as a primary care physician and hopes to address the issue of healthcare disparities in marginalized communities. In her free time, Oumou enjoys watching YouTube, reading, running her blog website, Oumou’s Personal Posts.
