Child of Nigerian immigrants, born in Texas, Mayowa is a second year Ph.D. student in the Cell & Developmental Biology program at the University of Michigan. He is a first-generation college graduate, receiving his B.S. in Biological Sciences from Oklahoma State University (2016) and M.S. in Medical Science from the University of Tokyo (2021). His current research focuses on early lung development, using primary and iPSC-derived organoid models alongside different types of sequencing (scRNA-seq, ATAC-seq, etc.) to understand different cell types and cell states. Having been through the graduate school application process twice, Mayowa is passionate about supporting and mentoring individuals from diverse backgrounds to better navigate obstacles and increase graduate school accessibility. Outside of lab, he enjoys travelling, music, restaurants, craft beer, and sports.
