Jay is currently a graduate student in the Immunology Ph.D. program at the University of Pennsylvania. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, he completed a BS in Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of Puerto Rico, Ro Piedras Campus in 2014. During his undergraduate studies, he did neuroscience research as MARC scholar and had the opportunity to do research internships at UC Berkeley and the University of Kentucky. He moved out west and fell in love with immunology at UCSF, where he focused on understanding the biology of innate lymphoid cells as initiators of Type 2 inflammation at mucosal sites and as sources of Type 2 cytokines in the meninges during brain development. He recently joined DeBroski Herberts group at Penn, where he will focus on dissecting type 2 immune circuits involving sinonasal tuft cells and trigeminal sensory neurons in models of allergic inflammation. Jay is passionate about working with students from underrepresented minorities the biomedical sciences. He hopes to continue to mentor, participate and establish programs and opportunities for such groups to reach their true potential as the next generation of scientists.
