Isabel is a second year Ph.D. student in Neuroscience at the University of British Columbia, Canada. Her research interests focus on Alzheimers Disease and the molecular mechanisms behind it. She is originally from Cuba and started her bachelors degree at the University of Havana before transferring to York University, Canada, where she completed her Honors Bachelors degree in Biology. She also earned her MSc. Degree with a neuroscience diploma there. During her MSc. thesis, she investigated models of Autism Spectrum Disorder. She is very passionate about helping other students since she knows the importance of having supportive mentors. She attributes a large part of her academic achievements to all the support she received by different professors and fellow students during very decisive points in her career, such as applying for Ph.D. positions and deciding between different labs. She was a mentor in a high-school mentorship program focusing on female high-school students interested in STEM fields. She enjoyed that opportunity and felt like she made a difference. Outside of research, Isabel enjoys reading, and exploring Vancouver.
