She/her

Feriel is a PhD student in the Computational Biology and Bioinformatics program at the University of Southern California (USC). She received her BA in Computer Science and Sexuality, Women’s and Gender Studies from Amherst College in 2020. Throughout her undergraduate years, she worked on projects that focused on developing databases for researchers to access data about exo-planets and facilitate the categorization of exo-Earths. After graduating, she joined the Ishizuka Lab at Yale University as a research assistant to conduct computational research on the mechanisms of tumor microenvironment inflammation shaped by nucleic acid stimulation. Now that she is in graduate school, she is studying evolutionary and population genetics and using mathematical models to answer biologically relevant questions. Her current focus is on the intersection of population genetics and forensic genetics. Outside of the lab, Feriel enjoys fostering dogs, exploring new LA restaurants, and reading mystery novels. As an international student who was once not familiar with the graduate application process, Feriel wants to share that knowledge and help demystify the entire process!
