Derek Wu is a first year Ph.D. student in the Population Biology, Ecology, and Evolution program at Emory University. His research focuses on microbial ecology and host-microbe interactions using the squash bug-Caballeronia bacteria model system. Derek completed his B.S. degree in biological sciences and environmental science from the University of Delaware in 2024. While in undergrad, he participated in two NSF REU programs (microbial ecology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and marine microbiology at Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium) and was awarded a Goldwater Scholarship. He looks forward to making new connections and helping mentees find the best next step for them after graduating!
