On January 12, 2022 we held a panel for mentees to learn how to get involved in undergraduate and postbac research. Panelists spoke on different ways to get involved in research, whether that’s through cold-emailing professors or through asking peers about their research experiences. Panelists emphasized the importance of sending out inquiries to multiple professors, as many professors can be busy or not looking to take on undergraduate researchers. In light of the pandemic, panelists suggested that those who cannot or are not permitted to engage in in-person research search for a bioinformatic based project that they can do remotely. Finally, panelists discussed different opportunities for post-bac research, whether that’s through formal programs like those hosted by the NIH or through spending a year or two as a research technician in an academic lab.
